Announced by the federal government on April 1, 2024, the National School Food Program outlines an investment of $1 billion in Canadian school food programs across five years. The program was created to ensure that the health, well-being, and learning outcomes of children are safeguarded by providing support to existing school food programs.
In October 2025, the federal government announced that the National School Food Program will be made permanent, with a commitment to invest $216.6 million annually, starting 2029-30.
The National School Food Policy was developed with the intention of ensuring that all children in Canada have access to nutritious & culturally appropriate school food services. Released in April 2024, this policy provides a roadmap to guide the principles, objectives, and long-term vision for sustainable school food programming across the country.
Existing as the formal program agreement between Canada and Yukon, this document outlines how federal funding will be used to enhance and expand school food programs in the Yukon.
Specific commitments detailed in the agreement include the flexibility to add Indigenous objectives and priorities and that specific considerations be made to address the needs of Indigenous children throughout the Yukon. Through this agreement, the Yukon is receiving approximately $7.4 million in federal funding for investments in school food programs.
