Data Hub

To help illuminate the size and scope of food insecurity, this datahub shares food provision data from various organizations across the Yukon. This helps us to understand the demands and see trends over time.

Food security exists when all people at all times have physical and economic access to adequate amounts of nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate food to maintain a healthy and active life.

Our geography and population dynamics pose unique food security challenges here in the Yukon. The nothern climate makes it difficult to grow food. The climate is changing faster in the north, impacting traditional food ways. High transportation costs give rise to high food prices. Many communities are rural and some remote, making food access even more challenging. The urban center of Whitehorse is the fifth fasteSt growing city in Canada, according to the canadian citizenship and Immigration Resource Centre Canada with a population growth rate of 10.54% putting additional pressure on our food needs.

To achieve food security, we must build resilient food systems. These are systems that can withstand challenges and recover quickly from difficulties. To do this we must first understand the elements of our regional food systems and the external factors that effect them.

If you are part of an organization that provides food as a community service and would like to see your work reflected here, please get in touch.
